What does manure really cost your stable? A full calculation

Handling manure costs most yards around €190 per box per month — but only a quarter of that arrives on an invoice. We break the figure into four parts and show how to calculate it for your own stable.

Manure is one of the largest hidden operating costs in a stable. Per box it typically runs to €160–210 a month — the sum of bedding, labour, removal and keeping a compliant storage area. At ten boxes that is €20,000–25,000 a year, and well over half of it is human work that never appears on an invoice.

Most yard managers know their bedding bill to the cent, because it arrives as an invoice. Far fewer can say what it costs simply to move manure from the box to the heap — even though that is the line that grows fastest and sets the ceiling on how many horses the current staff can look after. This guide splits the cost into four parts, works through a ten- and a thirty-box yard, and gives you a method to price it for your own operation in fifteen minutes.

How much manure does one horse produce

Every calculation starts with volume rather than weight, because volume is what determines the number of barrow trips, the size of the slab and the number of skips. The figures are strikingly consistent across European and North American sources.

Twelve tonnes a year from a single box only lands once you multiply it. A twenty-box yard produces 240 tonnes a year — the loaded weight of six articulated trailers. By volume that is 500 m³: a heap 15 by 15 metres and more than two metres high.

Why volume grows faster than you expect

Urine is roughly 40% of the mass, and it is urine that dictates how much bedding has to come out. Bedding that binds moisture poorly leaves the box in full — water included — and you pay to haul that water as if it were manure. Two yards with identical horse numbers can differ by 30% in the volume they remove.

Four cost components nobody adds up together

1. Bedding

The one line everyone knows. Across Europe it usually falls between €45 and €85 per box per month, depending on whether the yard uses home-grown straw, shavings, straw pellets or sawdust. It is also the only line where cutting back quietly makes things worse: less bedding means more ammonia and a harder lying surface.

2. Labour — the line without an invoice

This is where the real money sits. The figure used across the industry is about one hour a day for five horses, or roughly 12 minutes per box: muck out, barrow it out, tip it on the heap, walk back, re-bed. In practice it is worse, because the time does not scale linearly — the further the heap, the longer the trip, and past twenty boxes, as one industry source puts it, by the time you finish one end you can start again at the other.

An hour of work is not only a wage. It is also staff turnover, holiday cover and the real risk that on a Saturday morning nobody is there to do it.

3. Removal and disposal

This is the line that varies most between yards. A stable next door to an arable farm gives manure away, or is paid for it. A yard on the edge of a town with no land pays for a skip and haulage — and then 250 m³ a year at ten boxes becomes a dozen collections and a bill of €1,200–3,000. Worth re-checking twice a year; collection prices move faster than most contracts.

4. Storage and compliance

Under the EU Nitrates Directive and its national implementations, every holding that keeps livestock needs impermeable storage sized to hold several months of production. For ten horses that is roughly 100 m³ — about 52 m² of slab at two metres of stacking height, plus edges and access. Worked example: a ten-box yard

The model below rests on research figures for volume and time, and on clearly stated price assumptions. Replace the assumptions with your own — the structure of the calculation stays the same.

That totals €23,140 a year, or €193 per box per month. For comparison, full livery in much of Europe starts somewhere between €450 and €800 a month. Manure handling eats a quarter to a third of that before you have bought a single bale of hay.

  • The cost is almost entirely fixed. It does not fall when a box stands empty for a week.

What it looks like at thirty boxes

Scale does not help here the way it helps elsewhere. Bedding and removal rise linearly; labour rises faster, because routes lengthen and coordination time grows.

At thirty boxes, manure handling is more than one and a half full-time posts and over €70,000 a year. That is the point at which automation stops being a comfort question and becomes an arithmetic one.

Where the cost can actually be cut

Honestly: not everywhere. Ordered by what they really deliver.

  • Shorten the route (large effect, no capital). Moving the heap closer to the end of the aisle, or adding a second tipping point, can take two or three minutes off each box. At thirty boxes that is over an hour a day.
  • Switch to bedding that binds moisture (moderate effect). Less volume leaving the yard and fewer full strip-outs. Comparative studies of bedding materials found straw pellets best at binding ammonia and limiting its release — and they cut waste volume at the same time.
  • Compost (moderate effect, needs space). Cuts volume by 40–70%, which directly reduces haulage and the slab area you need. See the guide to composting horse manure.
  • Automate the transport (largest effect, highest entry cost). Mechanical systems in bedded yards cut the workload by about 50%, because mucking out itself stays manual, and simple scraper systems realistically pay back over 8–15 years. The stronger case is for solutions that remove the transport — the longest part of the cycle — rather than trying to replace the fork.
A caution on payback calculations

The usual mistake is comparing the machine only against saved wages. With today’s labour market the real gain is often different: you do not let anyone go, the same people simply look after 30–40% more horses without a longer day. Count the income from the extra boxes, not only the saved salaries.

How to price it for your own yard — four steps

  1. Measure the time, do not estimate it. For three consecutive days write down when mucking out starts and finishes. Divide by the number of boxes. Most yards are surprised upwards.
  2. Count volume, not weight. How many barrows come out of one box per day? A builder’s barrow is about 90 litres. Ten boxes × one barrow = 0.9 m³ a day = 330 m³ a year.
  3. Add up twelve months of bedding invoices and divide by box-months. A single month will mislead you; bedding use is seasonal.
  4. Price the compliance gap. If you do not have impermeable storage sized for several months, that is not a zero — it is a deferred cost plus regulatory risk.

Add those four lines together and you have a figure worth setting against the cost of any improvement you are considering. Experience from installations is consistent: the decision to automate moves quickly only once somebody sees the annual cost of manure written as a single number.
